MATC IT Network Specialist Student Serves on CISCO Live Dream Team

June 18, 2015

Milwaukee Area Technical College IT network specialist associate degree student Kristen Kelley (Schold) served on the CISCO Live Dream Team, which provided networking support for the CISCO Live 2015 convention in San Diego in June. Kelley was one of only 10 students chosen from the U.S. and Canada for this opportunity.

Dream Team members were chosen by the Cisco Networking Academy to support 250 exhibitors at the national convention and trade fair, which has an attendance of approximately 20,000 individuals. The students helped troubleshoot network connectivity issues for exhibitors. The Dream Team was chosen based on technical and professional skills, instructor recommendations, activities outside the classroom, a two-minute video application by the student, an essay, diversity and geographic representation. Each college may only recommend one student for the competition.

Kelley said, “I’ve had 100 percent support from my MATC IT instructors from the beginning, any time of the day or night. I’m grateful to them for getting me to CISCO Live.”

Layne Davis, an instructor in the MATC IT networking specialist associate degree program, recommended Kelley. Two years ago, Davis also recommended MATC student Ike Ozurumba, who also was selected for the 2013 Dream Team. "We are so proud that Kristen was selected for this prestigious honor,” said Davis. “It is truly a testament to the quality of our students that she is the second MATC IT networking student chosen for this coveted opportunity."

The Cisco Networking Academy is designed to help individuals prepare for industry-recognized certifications and entry-level information and communication technology careers. Cisco Systems, Inc., designs, manufactures, and sells internet protocol (IP)-based networking and other products related to the communications and information technology industries, holding more than 50 percent of the market share in networking solutions for businesses throughout the world.

Cisco pays for hotel, airfare, food and other expenses for members of the Dream Team, as well as paying for each participant to take a networking certification test as a bonus. During the conference, students are introduced to Cisco's highest profile managers and invited to special events.
